Lincoln, Nebraska ' December 15, 2005 ' The recipients of the 2005 Knute O. Broady Scholarship have been announced, according to Independent Study High School director Tim Ernst. Each year, recipients of the scholarship are selected based on financial need and scholastic record. This year's recipients include Lissa Haegert , Victoria Ganskow and Alicia Rasmussen.

Lissa Haegert
Lissa is an ISHS senior, planning to graduate in May of 2006. Lissa is completing her American high school education while serving as a missionary with her parents in The Gambia in western Africa . Lissa says she likes the ISHS because it allows her to do her school work at home rather than attending a boarding school or returning to the U.S. to attend high school.

An avid reader and writer, Lissa loves science fiction and fantasy fiction and is currently rewriting a science fiction novel she started nearly four years ago. Lissa, her sister and other friend have started a writing club at their missionary compound, meeting frequently to share and discuss their original stories. Other interests Lissa has are drawing, composing piano music and playing sports such as volleyball, soccer and softball.

'Physics is my favorite class,' Lissa says. 'Since I was eleven years old, I have always wanted to study Astronomy.' Currently enrolled in Physics at the ISHS, Lissa says almost every day she discovers how physics is behind even the smallest things. 'I enjoy discovering'as if for the first time'the laws that predict and explain the wonders of the world around me,' she marvels.

After graduation, Lissa hopes to further explore her fascination with Physics and Astronomy at Calvin College in Grand Rapids , Michigan . While at Calvin, Lissa's aspirations are to pursue undergraduate scientific research and study-abroad opportunities. After college, Lissa plans to study Astronomy in graduate school.

Lissa relayed an interesting story about her experience living in The Gambia. 'It was late afternoon,' she starts, 'and I was doing my schoolwork when I heard a sound like something dropping on the tin roof. I went outside to see the red underbellies of hundreds of thousands of locusts flying overhead.' Observing the locust swarm from atop a fifty-foot tree, Lissa watched as the locusts landed on the trees, crops and even the branches next to her.

'Toward the village, the people were lighting fires in hopes that the smoke would keep them away,' Lissa continues. 'The smoke and the clouds of locusts were swirling around, darkening the light of the late-afternoon sun. It's something I won't ever forget!'

Victoria Ganskow
A new ISHS student, Victoria is a junior hoping to advance her education and prepare for college.

With a passion for horseback riding, Victoria has been busy training her three-year old under saddle and rescuing a two-month old orphan filly she currently bottle-feeds. Victoria 's other interests include beadwork, painting and reading. Reporting she also likes to help people, Victoria works at her local hospital daycare.

After graduation, Victoria plans on joining the Air Force and attending college to pursue a degree in criminal justice. Her long-term goal is to become a judge and help children. 'I want to give children hope and,' Victoria says, 'ensure they have something to look forward to in the future.'

Alicia Rasmussen
Senior Alicia says her favorite class so far has been American Government because she enjoys learning about government and politics. Included in her list of activities and interests are gardening, theatre and fixing up her 1974 Volkswagen Beetle. After graduation, Alicia plans on attending college.
