Lincoln, Neb.,June 5, 2005 -- Students enrolled in the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Independent Study High School scored above the national average on the two main college admission tests, the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) and the American College Test (ACT).
Independent Study High School students achieved an average SAT verbal score of 569. The national average is 508. In the Math section of the SAT, Independent Study High School students scored an average of 554 while the national mean is 518. Average scores were based on 79 student scores. One student earned a perfect score of 800 on the Math section.
Ten student scores were reported on the ACT. Independent Study High School students averaged a composite score of 23.6. The state of Nebraska (16,523 score reports) average was 21.7 while the national composite (1,171,460 score reports) was 20.9.
Average scores are tallied based on students who reported to the testing agencies that they were students at the Independent Study High School. Many of these students are enrolled in Nebraska's diploma program and include homeschooled students, American students living overseas and other students not enrolled in a traditional high school.
The ISHS is currently celebrating its 76th anniversary. The high school began offering independent study courses to students in Nebraska in 1929 and today has students in all 50 states and 135 countries. With more than 105 courses in both online and print formats, the Independent Study High School offers both individual courses and courses leading to a diploma.
