Fire Protection Program Spring 2008 Courses
Classes meet at the Omaha Campus-Peter Kiewit Institute and begin August 27, 2007.

Building Construction for the Fire Service - NEW COURSE
FPT2510 Mon./Tues. 4:00-6:45 p.m. PKI 263
Building collapse and structural failure under fire conditions contribute to numerous firefighter and civilian fatalities each year. This new course will discuss and define the different types of building construction, construction materials, building codes, fire prevention features, and the specific hazards associated with different types of structures. This course will educate future firefighters and members of the construction industry about the inherent dangers of structures that have been subjected to and compromised by fire.

Instructor: Bernie Kanger is a battalion chief with the Omaha Fire Department. He earned an associate’s degree in Fire Protection Technology from UNL and a bachelor’s in Fire Service Management from Western Illinois University. He has earned credit in multiple National Fire Academy Courses.


Fire Chemistry
FPT1600 Mon./Tues. 7:00-9:45 p.m. PKI 263
An introduction to the fundamentals of chemistry and the chemical aspects of fire science. Fire characteristics of gases, liquids and solids including plastics and the chemistry of smoke are examined. Review of the chemical aspects of fire extinguishing agents and fire retardants.

Instructors: Dave DeBoer, P.E., C.E.M. is a senior utilization engineer for the Metropolitan Utilities District (MUD). He earned a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from UNL and has over 20 years of experience in power generation and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning.

David Rohan, P.E. is a project manager and senior mechanical engineer with HDR Engineering. He is also in the facilities section of the Environmental and Resource Management Group, currently working in the natural gas, ethanol, and power industries. Rohan holds a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and a master’s degree in Industrial and Management Systems Engineering – both from UNL. He is also a member of the National Fire Protection Association.


Fire Codes and Inspections
FPT 2200 Wed./Thurs. 7:00-9:45 p.m. PKI 263
A study of the State of Nebraska fire code as it applies to commercial structures. The course includes an analysis of life safety features and implementation of fire codes for effective inspections.

Instructor: Joe Mancuso is a battalion chief in charge of the Omaha Fire Department Training Bureau. He earned a masters degree from UNO and is a graduate of the National Fire Academy Executive Fire Officer program. Joe is currently pursuing an additional masters in Executive Fire Service Leadership from Grand Canyon University.
