UNL Faculty Discussion Strategy: Real World Issue

Learning Goals/Purpose:

  • Enable students to benefit from multidisciplinary perspectives that classmates bring to the forums.
  • Have students share knowledge and experiences of key issues with classmates.
  • Have students focus on workplace issues and concepts related to the course materials.
  • Students help each other apply concepts to their past or current work environments.

Instructor Role:

  • Initiate discussion
  • Summarize responses
  • Post a follow-up question to get students to think about the issue/problem in a new way

Student Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the discussion board at least 2-3 times week.
  • Be willing to share personal experiences.

Process:

  1. The instructor posts a real-world issue/problem to the discussion board that relates to the topic for the week.
  2. Students are directed to respond to the issue/problem based on an experience they may have had with this issue/problem in their past. They are asked to describe how the issue/problem was resolved, if they agreed with what happened, and what they might do differently if faced with the same issue/problem based on the class readings and discussions.

Discussion Strategy is from GRBA 814, Applied Organizational Behavior. Thanks to Professor Steve Farner, Department of Management, College of Business Administration.
