Discussion Board
UNL Faculty Discussion Strategy: Article Critique
Goal: To promote student ownership of the course and the material they must master.
Instructor Role: Instructor assigns each student an article and the date that a critique is to be posted to the discussion board. These assignments are staggered throughout the semester so that no more than one or two are being posted and responded to at any given time.
Student Responsibilities: Each student must read and summarize an article at the assigned time. The other students are expected to review and comment upon the summary.
Process:
- Each student is given an article to review, summarize, and critique.
- The student sends a rough draft of the summary and review to the professor prior to posting to insure that salient information is included.
- Each student is given a date for posting his/her critique to the discussion board.
- Once the review or critique is posted, the other students must:
a. post a substantive response to the original critique; b. post at least two responses to other students. - The professor also responds to the summary, adding information that might be missing or broadening the scope of the discussion.
Additional Information: The professor reviews with the students ahead of time what is expected in a professional critique. The professor also details what she means by a substantive response.
